According to Wikipedia, the compass wasn't used for navigation until the 11th century (in the Song dynasty). Wikipedia variously states that it was originally used for divination ("attempt[ing] to gain insight into a question or situation by way of an occultic, standardized process or ritual") and "possibly ... to order and harmonize buildings in accordance with the geomantic principles of feng shui."
